Rock Jaw is a company that truly cares about the product they manufacture. Being a music lover, one of the things you have to appreciate is when you hear your favorite song pumping out loud, crisp and clear. Unfortunately, more often than not it is harder to achieve this by means of inexpensive audio products. There is a saying that “you get what you pay for”, Rock Jaw doesn’t believe this is true. They design products that not only produce great sound, but also supply affordable products. This is exactly what they have done with the Rock Jaw Alfa Genus in-ear earphones.
These earphones have been designed with 8mm dynamic neodymium drivers and are composed of aluminium and ebony, which offer a warm inviting sound experience. Three different tuning filters are included for customizing one’s preferences. By simply removing the ear tips, users are free to unscrew the tuning filters and replace them with one of the other included sets.
HOW IT WORKS
While testing out the filters, we listened to several genres of music including, but not limited to: classical, classic rock, punk rock and pop. We also listened to some interview style podcasts.
The black set of filters provide a clear, crisp sound, with a nice balance of treble and bass. You can easily identify the individual types of instruments used in each arrangement. The mid-notes are unclouded. Bass notes are present, but aren’t the centre of attention. The treble is discernible without becoming intrusive or brassy. We felt that these filters provided a more neutral sound and would recommend them for everyday listening.
The champagne set are listed as neutral however they do seem to lean a little heavier on the treble and bass notes tend to take a back seat. Percussion instruments are sharper than you would expect. At the higher range of the sound limit, cymbals and chimes tend to become tinny.
The chrome set is all about the bass, with low treble. The Bass tones are warm and full. This set is perfect for listening to rap music and heavy bass themed music. If you are listening to the chrome filters at a very high volume the music starts to distort slightly. One thing is for sure, Rock Jaw definitely didn’t forget about the bass lovers out there.
The 1.2m cord is coated with what feels like a rubberized plastic, keeping it kink-free and untangled. The Rock Jaw Alfa Genus earphones also comprise a microphone/control unit, which is on the cord for the left earphone. This is compatible with iOS and Android. Users can click once to pause music, twice to skip to the next track or three times to restart the current track. While using the phone call function, callers reported excellent clarity and little background noise. The dark wood grain that is paired with the aluminium give the earphones a modern appearance. The markings for left/right earphones are faint, making it slightly difficult to see. As long as you keep in mind that the control is on the left earphone, you’re golden. In addition to the aforementioned interchangeable tuning filters, three sets of ear tips are included in varying sizes.
The draw string bag provided is adequate although it would be nice to have a proper storage space for the filters, as they are small and could easily be lost.
Overall, the Rock Jaw Alfa Genus in-ear earphones are comfortable to wear and, once you discover the filter that works best for you, are a pleasant experience. As for the price, they sit at $45.00 on Amazon, which is a very good price for such a great product, so good that it is well deserving of the top-value award!
