Raidmax Cobra Wide-Body ATX Case Review – More Than Just Eye Candy

It is interesting to see the motherboard tray colored electric green, adding to the already large amount of green accenting found through LED lighting around the chassis. The spark gives it a nice flavour indeed and the large central hole allows for installation of massive heatsinks and waterblocks.

While the motherboard tray is non-removable, the deep-set wide-body patented design allows for the back of the motherboard tray to accommodate up to 25mm of cable-management clearance:

The surrounding area has adequate pass-throughs for cable management, however we would have loved to see additional cutouts with all of them coated in rubber/inserted with rubber grommets; as it stands, they look plain compared to such vibrant green colour, not to mention a tad straining on cables:

FINAL WORDS AND CONCLUSION

The Raidmax Cobra is a wide-body mid-tower chassis that allows multi-functionality whether you are a gamer or consumer.  The Cobra provides all the essentials to create a powerful gaming computer, and is definitely one of the most unique chassis we have reviewed. It has the perfect size – in the middle of a standard ATX and XL-ATX – which is quickly becoming the preferred maximum size for many users.

The neon and cyan green accentuated and saturated throughout the Cobra will certainly be an acquired taste; however we found many people loved it. The Cobra is brilliant in its spacious wide-body frame, and the addition of side handles, large cut-outs, as well as snap-and-slide expansion bays makes it a worthy contender in the chassis arena.

There are a few negatives though. A little extra packaging contents, including an auxiliary 3/5″ conversion bracket would have been great. An extra fan on the top of Cobra would have complemented the rear exhaust and front fans perfectly. Adding an extra air filter to the top of the chassis, and making it and the included bottom fan filter magnetic would have been solid add-ons. Not forgetting of course having two USB 3.0 instead of one 3.0 and one 2.0, as USB 3.0 is the modern standard, and adding a top drive dock/fan controller would certainly have increased the appeal. Finally, rubberized motherboard cut-outs for cable management would have been preferred over the grommet-less plain metal holes.

With everything said and done, the Raidmax Cobra surpassed our expectations.  For a mere $75-$80 you are getting a multi-functional case that can be utilized by any user, whether they be an avid gamer or the average consumer builder. While there are a few rough spots, the attention to detail is amazing and certainly worth the asking price considering many high-end cases do not carry many of the features this one does.
