Mushkin Redline DDR4-2666 Memory Review

HANDBRAKE

Handbrake is a popular, free video conversion utility which uses H.264 video encoding. We test our system performance by converting a 1080p video which is 530MB to H.264 in an MP4 container.

Finally! a win for lower timings. Our 2133MHz is able to slightly outpace the others in average frame-rate.

PHOTOSHOP CC

In our Photoshop CC test, we employ the Radial Blur Test for measuring CPU and Memory performance. It works by applying a complex Radial Blur filter to a high-resolution image (4500 x 3000), and measuring the time it takes to finish the task.

Our Photoshop tests seems to hate our 2133MHz configuration, as the other two speeds seem to perform exactly the same.

GAMING

At Technology X we like to throw in a couple of gaming benchmarks in our RAM reviews, and today we’ll be testing a couple of our favorites: Tomb Raider (2013), and Crysis 3.

 TOMB RAIDER (2013)

For Tomb Raider, we tested the game on “Ultimate” settings with TressFX and FXAA turned on at 1080p.

As we can see, all the configurations are able to deliver a smooth experience and none deliver an average frame-rate below 85. Performance is inline with other kits we’ve tested, and not at all surprising.

CRYSIS 3

We tested on “High” settings at 1080p with FXAA.

In Crysis we get a little more of a varied performance between each configuration, while all are able to deliver a smooth experience, the 2400MHz configuration does perform slightly worse than the others.

REPORT ANALYSIS AND FINAL THOUGHTS

Mushkin has been known throughout the years, to provide exceptionally capable overclocking memory kits for fairly low prices. It is true that many of their DDR3 offerings beat most of the competition in price-to-performance ratio.

Unfortunately, If you came to this report looking for an enthusiast level overclocking kit, we’re sorry to say, this is probably not it. The fact that we were unable to overclock our sample past its rated speeds proves that. That being said, this kit is capable of getting significantly lower timings than it is rated for, and performance does improve with the right amount of tweaking.

Mushkin’s Redline is definitely a solid contender in the current DDR4 market, and if you find it for the right price, you definitely won’t be displeased. All of this considered, we proudly award Mushkin our Silver Seal for their Redline Frostbyte.
