Samsung 840 EVO mSATA SSD Review (500GB) – Exceptional Performance in a Large mSATA Capacity

AS SSD BENCHMARK VER. 1.7

AS SSD Benchmark uses incompressible data to test your storage device, essentially providing results that would be consistent with using the heaviest workload, thus lower speeds are expected. Transfer speeds (MB/s) are seen in the first picture below and IOPS (Input/Output Operations Per Second) are the second.

AS SSD

As we can see above, the Samsung 840 EVO mSATA SSD has read and write speeds that are similar to that of the scores previously seen with Crystal Disk Mark, again with another slight decrease in performance, but still scoring exceptionally well at 1115.

Another interesting feature of the AS SSD Benchmark is that it also can test sample durations and speeds of copying various files, all of which demonstrate exceptional file transfer speeds.

ANVIL STORAGE UTILITIES PROFESSIONAL (BETA)

Anvil Storage Utilities is essentially an all-in-one tool for all of your SSD benchmarking needs. Anvil can be used for basic consumer testing, as well as endurance testing and threaded I/O read, write and mixed tests. It displays data regarding the SSD, and even about your system.

ASU demonstrates that the Samsung 840 EVO mSATA SSD again reads and writes at great speeds, and generates an impressive 4896 total score.

PCMARK VANTAGE X64 HDD SUITE

Technology X uses benchmark software called PCMark Vantage x64 HDD Suite to create testing scenarios that might be used in the typical user experience. There are eight tests in all and the tests performed record the speed of data movement in MB/s to which they are then given a numerical score after all of the tests are complete. The simulations are as follows:

  • Windows Defender In Use
  • Streaming Data from storage in games such as Alan Wake which allows for massive worlds and riveting non-stop action
  • Importing digital photos into Windows Photo Gallery
  • Starting the Vista Operating System
  • Home Video editing with Movie Maker which can be very time-consuming
  • Media Center which can handle video recording, time shifting and streaming from Windows media center to an extender such as XBox
  • Cataloging a music library
  • Starting applications

SAMSUNG 840 EVO 500GB mSATA SSD VANTAGE PERFORMANCE

The Samsung 840 EVO mSATA SSD demonstrates it’s superiority once again, as seen below in PCMark Vantage testing. 6 of our 8 tests resulted in speeds that reach SATA 3 capabilities, with three tests that exceed the 400 MB/s transfer speeds. The SSD resulted in a total score of 75069, which is at the high end of scores we have seen previously.

As we thought it deserving, we have included our SSD PCMark Vantage Hierarchy Chart in order to demonstrate the placement of the 840 EVO amongst all other mSATA SSDs tested here, and at The SSD Review.  The 840EVO 1TB and 500GB SSDs placed No. 1 and 2 of all mSATA SSDs tested to date…very impressive!

PCMark Vantage Comparison Chart - mSATA SSDs

  1. Nice, no drop performance from 1TB and as the same price as other SSDs. What is next PCI-E raid card for those babys ? 🙂
