Searching out the right set of in-ear headphones can be repetitive and expensive for music lovers. Finding the right fit is close to impossible and when found, the sound is inevitably not there. Or…just when you like the sound, quality is questionable, the buds don’t feel right with any time in-ear or, well yes, they just fall out. My search for ‘the perfect buds’ centers on a fit that provides the comfort needed for many 10-plus hour flights, sound that provides as much of a balance as it does a warmth, and also, I don’t want the mix of music and the outside world when I am listening. My music is my escape, as brief as it may be. Sennheiser seems to have heard my call in their build of the Momentum M2 IEi In-ear Headphones.
The Momentum M2 IEi’s are available now and retail for around $100. They are available in black/red or back chrome and their construction is beyond reproach. They come in a very well built zippered nylon case to protect your ‘buds’, and trust us when we say this is absolutely necessary, considering cable length is 1.3m in length. As much as this can be a bit of a pain for us short guys, it is a windfall for those over 6′ I might guess.
The M2 IEi cable is of a very well constructed rubber and somewhat eliptical, or flat in shape, eliminating the common problem of cable tangle. While this is definitely a benefit, the gold-plated plugin at the end could have used a bit more engineering. The connector housing is a right angle hard plastic which does not mix well with our newest 6s Plus with the sound port on the bottom of the phone. If anything is going to break or short on the Momentum M2 IEi, it will be that connector.
We mentioned that these are available for both iOS or Android and the difference in each pertains only to controller functions. Fortunately we have both in hand to ensure controller operation for both platforms. The controller provides playback, pause, next track, previous track as well as volume up and down. It also functions very well in phone use and the mic is clear during phone use. The only concern we may with the controller is the fact that it is so high up on the cable. Placing it three inches lower would have been ideal.
In-ear fit and comfort is my true love with the Sennheiser Momentum M2 IEi In-Ear headphones. They are constructed differently than any previous ear buds we have seen and fit the ear canal perfectly, inclusive of a 15 degree angle bend in their build which affords a very natural and secure fit. As they fill the ear canal, noise-isolation occurs and the only sound that reaches your ears is that of music or any media that you may be listening to. I don’t miss those irritating airplane engines or passenger noises whatsoever.
Sound quality is what has become the standard for Sennheiser’s and, the one thing that stands out is the bass; it is strong yet not overpowering by any means. We thing this is the result of the Momentum M2 IEi construction as plastic has been traded for high quality stainless steel on all acoustical components.
We think the decision to use metal, vice plastic, also provides for amazing clarity and great highs, although there is definitely a warmth in sound that we would not have expected with these Momentums. Make no mistake; the sound of the Sennheiser Momentum M2 IEi’s is probably the best we have heard from a pair of In-Ears to date, and 2-year warranty is included.
As much as many might be hesitant to pay $100 for in-ear headphones, the gains for this price are very clear. For me personally, my search for a perfect fitting set of ‘buds’ has reach an end and the bonus of hearing great sound, with the added benefit of substantive noise isolation, is music to my ears. Sennheiser stands out as a company that, not only strives to bring the best of sound to the world but also, does its best to put the highest quality in the hands of the consumer, enthusiast and audiophile at a great price. The Sennheiser Momentum M2 IEi In-Ear Headphones is very deserving of our Editor’s Choice Award!
