Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM Lens Review

REPORT ANALYSIS AND FINAL THOUGHTS

After around a year of using this lens I must say it is one of my favorites. Though it is a larger and heavier lens to hold, having the one stop faster aperture than the f/4 variants is completely worth it. I am able to shoot at ISOs half of what I would normally and can reap the rewards of better bokeh on top of that! The only real fault I can think of for this lens is its weight, but it is to be expected due to the tank like build quality. Unlike those cheap plastic-fantastic kit lenses, a lens like this is meant to last a life time.

When shooting sports at dusk and night the f/2.8 aperture really helps to allow me to maintain higher quality images. Not only that, but matched with its fast accurate autofocus I am able to capture more in focus shots than before. I would definitely recommend using a monopod when shooting games with this lens as well. I have gone through about 2 semesters worth of college baseball and football games and using this lens without one is probably going to tire some out if they aren’t used to working out. For portrait shooting, this lens is almost unmatched, only bested by the Canon EF 135mm f/2L USM in my opinion. Have the versatility of its zoom range matched with the maximum f/2.8 aperture I am able to go out and shoot without having to change my lens 90% of the time.

Overall, I would highly recommend this lens to anyone who needs an extremely versatile lens with high IQ. Although it lacks the weather sealing and image stabilization of its newer brother, if you can overcome those differences, you will not be disappointed with this lens.
