Kingston DataTraveler microDuo (32 GB) Review – Transfer Files Easily To Your Android Device!

TECHNOLOGY X TESTING PROTOCOL

At Technology X, we test our SSD’s slightly different depending upon the drive’s marketed purpose, that of a consumer or an enterprise focused SSD.  For a consumer SSD, our goal is to test in a system that has been optimized with our SSD Optimization Guide, however, CPU C State alteration may or may not have occurred depending on the motherboard and BIOS configurations. Benchmarks for our consumer tests are that of fresh drives, so that we can verify that the manufacturer’s specifications match the SSD. Additionally, we also try to include links to the benchmarks used in our report so that you as the reader can replicate our tests to confirm that your SSD is top-notch.

BENCHMARK SOFTWARE

The software used for today’s analysis is typical of many of our reviews and consists of Piriform Speccy and ATTO Disk Benchmark. Due to this drive not being speed orientated, as you will clearly see, we only included ATTO. Extensive testing of this drive isn’t necessary do to it’s alternate direction, simplicity for you and your Android device.  In consumer reports, we prefer to test with easily accessible software that the consumer can obtain, and in many cases, we even provide links. Our selection of software allows each to build on the last and to provide validation to results already obtained.

PIRIFORM SPECCY

Piriform Speccy is a great tool for checking the status and health of your computer system. It provides you with brief summary, or a detailed look, at your operating system, CPU, RAM, motherboard, graphics, storage, optical drives, audio, peripherals and network.

Speccy DT MicroDuo

As you can see, when we insert the DataTraveler microDuo it acts just like any normal USB flash drive. WE can also see that after formatting the ultra-portable drive has 29.3 GB of usable storage available.

ATTO DISK BENCHMARK VER. 2.47

ATTO Disk Benchmark is a relatively easy-to-use benchmark tool, which happens to be the benchmark of choice for many manufacturers. ATTO uses compressible data rather than random data, which results in higher performance and thus, higher benchmark scores. In our testing, we have selected the transfer size to range from 0.5KB to 8192KB, and have set the total length of the test to be 256MB.

Atto DT MicroDuo

Our benchmark test shows us exactly what we expected, that this USB drive is definitely not for speed freaks who need to transfer files at blazing speeds. As we have stated before, this drive is solely focused towards giving you an alternative way to transfer your files. Of course, we can speculate that in time we can expect to see USB 3.0 technology incorporated into the OTG devices, but for now we must wait.

REPORT ANALYSIS AND FINAL THOUGHTS

While not being the only usb Flash drive that allows you to transfer files from an Android device to your computer (or vice versa), the Kingston microDuo is one of the smallest drives to do so. Doing a quick comparison to some of the other Android OTG drives, you will quickly notice the size difference. What makes this drive more of a difficult sell is that it is only compatible for certain devices that are equipped with USB OTG, unfortunately. While rooting your Android device is a workaround, it is not the most convenient way to make this device work for you. However, it is important to remember that this is something that is specifically built into your phone, and not a restriction of the DT microDuo at all. The USB OTG technology is relatively new, and manufacturers are just beginning to roll this out into their devices. It would also be interesting to see if there was a way to incorporate a lightning adapter rather than micro USB, for all of our Apple fans. It could be an interesting option, especially if, at time of purchase, you didn’t want to spend more for the larger capacity. If you have recently upgraded to a newer Android device more than likely you will be able to use the Kingston microDuo USB OTG drive without any issues.

Kingston DataTraveler MicroDuo Open

This small device can really make your life that much easier, all by plugging the Kingston DataTraveler microDuo into the micro USB charging port of your Android device. Kingston has created a very easy way for you to transfer your files from your Android device to your computer with ease. It was demonstrated to us at CES this past January, where you could easily transfer a video from your computer to the microDuo, and display that video on your Android device. It is such an easy way to save precious internal capacity on your Android device, especially if your device does not feature expandable memory (I.e., does not have an external SD card slot). For this, Technology X proudly awards the Kingston DataTraveler microDuo USB  OTG drive with out Innovation award.

Long weekends are a perfect opportunity to take the family up to the cottage for a fun-filled and relaxing weekend. For many of those who return from the weekend with a smartphone filled with great pictures and shots from throughout the weekend, it can be difficult to transfer those pictures over to your computer. You may have a dropbox account where they are automatically uploaded to the cloud, but that takes time and could cost you data. You could also email them all to yourself, but again that takes up too much time and it may  compress the images into smaller…

Innovative Flash Drive!

The Kingston DataTraveler microDuo USB OTG flash drive is an easy option when looking to store those larger video files somewhere other than in your precious internal storage of your Android device. It's just unfortunate that the Android compatibility list isn't any larger.
