Samsung 840 EVO mSATA SSD Review (500GB) – Exceptional Performance in a Large mSATA Capacity

SAMSUNG RAPID MODE TECHNOLOGY

Samsung RAPID Mode uses your computers idle DRAM in order to speed up the transfer of data significantly. The software can be used on any single Samsung 840 SSD, whether you use it for your boot drive or as a secondary data drive. Activating RAPID Mode is quite easy, as it is as simple as enabling RAPID Mode and restarting your computer. It is important to keep in mind that RAPID Mode can only be used on one Samsung SSD per system. Below you can see a comparison of the Samsung 840 EVO prior to enabling RAPID Mode, and after enabling.

BEFORE ENABLING RAPID MODE:

AFTER ENABLING RAPID MODE:

As you can see, RAPID Mode significantly increases drive performance. Let’s put the Samsung 840 EVO through our benchmarking software suite once again with RAPID Mode enabled for another good comparison.

It is important to remember that we are using DRAM for data transfer, hence ATTO’s more skewed visualization. Consistent transfer speed performance is not as common as what we usually will be able to visualize with SATA 3 testing.

Crystal Disk Mark illustrates, with the enabling of RAPID Mode, that the Samsung 840 EVO mSATA SSD has dramatically increased performance of large files, and has exceptional low 4K random write speeds.

840 EVO mSATA AS SSD

Interestingly enough, AS SSD illustrates read and write speeds that are only slightly higher than prior to enabling RAPID Mode, yet the Samsung 840 EVO mSATA SSD still produces a total score of 2666, which is still quite exceptional.

The copy benchmark above demonstrates that the Samsung 840 EVO mSATA SSD will perform exceptionally well if you are one who is consistently transfer files of large volumes.

ASU demonstrates that the Samsung 840 EVO mSATA SSD still greatly benefits in the performance column when RAPID Mode is enabled. Another interesting point is that the the write speeds are actually lower than that of prior enabling RAPID Mode, but again producing a total score of 7197.23 which is still impressive.

The Samsung 840 EVO mSATA SSD produces an outstanding PCMark total score of 87712. The SSD also produced speeds of 726 MB/s in Windows Media Center testing.

Samsung is a manufacturer that needs no introduction and they are about to release a mSATA SSD that will definitely be making waves across the SSD market, never mind the technology world. The Samsung 840 EVO mSATA SSD will soon be gracing our presence, and the performance unprecedented thanks to Samsung's software engineering sorcery. Samsung has clearly dedicated themselves to developing and engineering a SSD that, not only, appeases the masses with larger storage capacities, but by also accompanying these SSD's with exceptional performance. Throughout this review you will see that we tested the Samsung 840 EVO mSATA SSD without…

  1. Nice, no drop performance from 1TB and as the same price as other SSDs. What is next PCI-E raid card for those babys ? 🙂
