It’s not often that when a package arrives at our doorstep we are baffled at what could possibly be inside, and that was just the case with our most recent product sample. Four black envelopes with an inviting “lift here” comment on the front of the packaging. Literally, the packaging is as thin as receiving a bill in the mail. You can feel that there is something extremely thin, and mysterious within these envelopes.
Almost irresistibly, we ripped open the packaging only to find two of the most ingenious, yet simple products we have seen to date. We were greeted by the NOMAD CHARGEKEY and CHARGECARD. More often than not, we have found that after a normal eight-hour work day we go to reach for our mobile device and we are greeted with that lovely “10% Battery Remaining” pop-up. Irritated, we scramble for a charging cable or mobile battery to keep the life line alive … Ok, so we are not that overly attached to our devices, but there are times when you need an Apple lightning adapter or micro USB cable in a hurry. Imagine, having one in your pocket or purse at all times, without the mess and clutter. Bring in NOMAD. A project that originally started out on Kickstarter, has progressively made it’s way through to reinventing the USB cable.
As simple as it sounds, the NOMAD CHARGEKEY is roughly the length of the average car key, yet 1/3rd of the width. This super tiny device can easily fit onto your keychain and gives you access to either Apple’s lightning cable or to a micro USB cable, which you would normally use for a Windows Phone, Android Device or Blackberry.
This key takes up little to no room, and it smaller than most of the other trinkets that could possibly be on your keychain. The key is comprised of a rubber-like material, which will prevent it from damage if you keep it in your pocket, lets say with your car keys.
On one end of the key you will find the according adapter (lightning or micro USB) depending on what device you use, and on the other end you will find a USB adapter.
Again, staying with the idea of a simple yet innovative product, the NOMAD CHARGECARD is a card that is almost identical in size with a credit card, but a little bit thicker. The increased thickness is understandable considering that USB adapter can not be overly altered or it wouldn’t fit in the according USB slots.
On the top side of the card you will find the according micro USB or Apple lightning adapter, and in the middle of the card you will find an USB adapter that can be pulled away from the card.
This slightly rubberized card fits within any wallet, with a slight push and pull at first considering the additional thickness of the card.
REPORT ANALYSIS AND FINAL THOUGHTS
After a couple weeks of use, the NOMAD CHARGEKEY and CHARGECARD turned out to be pretty handy. While they weren’t used everyday, they were great for a quick charge at the office or in the car. It was even convenient for syncing up the iPhone 5s with iTunes, when a lightning cable wasn’t nearby.
At the time of writing this article, the convenient devices are available on NOMAD’s Website for pre-order, at a price of $29.00 each. The CHARGEKEY proved to be worth it’s weight, but the CHARGECARD was a little bit more awkward. The flexible center of the card that features the USB adapter was hard to use, especially to plug a device into a computer. It’s important to note that the CHARGECARD that is available for pre-order from NOMAD’s website is a different prototype that looks to be more coordinated then the prototype we have received. It’ll be interesting to see where the product ends up!
Throughout the week, the NOMAD CHARGEKEY and CHARGECARD’s were used flawlessly on a variety of devices, ranging from a Blackberry Z30 to an iPad Mini and iPhone 5s. NOMAD has truly created an innovative product that will soon be in your pocket or purse! They are great accessories that you definitely won’t be leaving home without! It’s this rationale that has lead us to awarding NOMAD with Technology X’s Innovation Award!
