Nextbase 622GW 4K Dash Cam Review – As Good as Dash Cams Get

NEXTBASE APP

It just isn’t right telling you the best there is about this cam without letting you know the…not so best…as well.  The Android App… leaves a lot to be desired and I almost turfed this camera in result. Almost.  The problem lies in the fact that both BT5 and Wi-Fi are used in unison and create difficulty at times.  In my first installation, the camera would simply not connect when going into ‘Live View’ and the ‘Wi-Fi Connection in Progress’ Screen went on forever.  The difficulty then lies that you will most likely close the App and start again.  In my first installation, it would then ‘blue screen’ and get hung up there.  At one point, I came up with the idea to re-install the App and that seems to have fixed this issue.  When it does work, you have to authorize recognition of the encrypted connection which should never be the case.  Just start the #$% live view quickly please!

Trust me when I say there are so many features in this camera, many of which are on by default, that you have to work your way through the menus and settings, learn them and turn some off.  For instance, in the Corvette, EVERY TIME I hit a bump, the camera would register it as an accident and change what was taping to protect the recording of that bump. We had to turn that off.  As well by default, the camera saves a high and low resolution of your video, which is twice as many if you are recording with one of the additional cameras.  That is a lot of video clips.  On the other hand, if you have a rear camera connected, there is a Reversing Camera that works perfectly on your 622GW screen.  once again…very well thought out and feature rich!

PRODUCT PRICING

At the time of this report, we found the Nextbase 622GW on Amazon for $389 which is a bit higher than one might find for similar dash cameras…. but this is the 622GW.  It is 4K, has the ability to switch off to multiple resolutions and speeds including super slow motion, and its feature set is well above that of any other dash cam that we know of, not to mention the IPS Touch Screen.

The Rear View camera that we are using in the Vette is priced on Amazon at $99, as is the Rear View camera that you can simply attach to the camera itself.  The Cabin View camera is $94.95 at the time of this update.

REPORT SUMMARY AND FINAL THOUGHTS

Throughout the years, we have had the opportunity to install and utilize many in-car cameras in, not only our cars, but sport vehicles as well.  The Nextbase 622GW is just about the best we have seen to date, short of the issues we have had with the Android App that controls the camera.

The 622GW can be set to start and shut off with your cars engine and has a built in battery which allows for continuous recording for a short period after the car has been shut off…or if it is bumped.  The video is very high quality and the simple fact that this camera has image stabilization is of definite benefit to sports car enthusiasts who don’t always follow the slowest, straightest and smoothest roads.

With the Nextbase 622GW, one can turn off recording identification of your location, speed, date and time.  After all, that is the easiest way to earn a speeding ticket if you find yourself going a bit over the posted limit. Location.  Speed. Time and date.

For our own use, we took the time to disassemble the car and hardwire the 622GW. There are two methods of having it stop and start with your car, this being the first.  The second, of course, is having it plugged into a lighter style power plug that switches on and off with the car.

As a last point, we had recommended this camera to an industry peer who had problems with his initial use and determined it was the cause of the microSD card he had chosen. Nextbase is very clear in stating that they recommend their own microSD card to ensure maximum compatibility with the unit.  He switched to their card and all was good.  I was provided the Nextbase 64GB card but, because of my driving habits I wanted larger .  Listed specs say max 128GB.  I have been using a 256GB  U3 V60 C10 microSD card without issue for some time now.
