G.Skill Ripjaws 4 DDR4-2666 Memory Review – Exceptional Overclocking Performance

GAMING BENCHMARKS

At Technology X we like to throw in a couple of gaming benchmarks in our RAM reviews, and today we’ll be testing a couple of our favorites: Tomb Raider (2013), and Crysis 3.

CRYSIS 3

We tested on “High” settings at 1080p with FXAA.

As we can see, performance is nearly identical across all three configurations, with our 2666MHz config scoring slightly less on the minimum. That being said, all three configurations provide a very smooth gameplay experience without issue.

TOMB RAIDER (2013)

For Tomb Raider, we tested the game on “Ultimate” settings with TressFX and FXAA turned on at 1080p.

Tomb Raider is a bit of a different story, however. While all three configurations do manage to provide a very smooth experience, our 2400MHz config does differ ever so slightly from the rest, scoring higher on the minimum and fairly significantly lower on the maximum. Average FPS is relatively the same across all three.

REPORT ANALYSIS AND FINAL THOUGHTS

At the start of this report we mentioned that G.Skill had created a reputation for itself for making competitively priced memory, which is highly capable at overclocking. In our time with their latest Ripjaws 4 DDR4 memory kit, we must say that statement is definitely reaffirmed. When you consider that the average price of a DDR4 memory kit which is rated for 3000MHz CL15 is nearly $350, and that we were able to relatively easily achieve these exact same speeds with a kit that currently costs under $300, that is pretty impressive!

Sure, as we’ve stated in the past DDR4 is definitely not cheap, but with companies like G.Skill offering top-notch performers that are competitively priced, it is hard to imagine that will be true for long. Afterall, DDR4 has dropped in price quite a bit since it was introduced late last year, and we have no doubts that by this time next year we’ll be seeing DDR4 prices beating that of DDR3.

If you’re an overclocking enthusiast in the market for a very capable kit DDR4 memory kit, we have absolutely no problem recommending this memory kit. That being said, even if you’re not a overclocker, this memory performs quite well right out of the box, without any tweaking aside from enabling XMP, which is par for the course.

  1. Donny, please post a screenshot of Thaiphoon Burner utility next time, since you did not provide anything from SPD.

  2. About to pull the trigger on ripjaws ram and this heat sink. Glad to know the clearance is there.

    • It is, but because of the overall bulk of the cooler it is advised to install the RAM first, and then the cooler as doing it the other way around can be a hassle.
